DISCURSO DE LA SERVIDUMBRE VOLUNTARIA
DE LA BOÉTIE, ETIENNE
The Speech of voluntary servitude (1572), by Étienne de la Boétie, is a classic text of political philosophy, one of the first great arguments against domination and authoritarianism; its subversive power is still in force. La Boétie, greatly admired by his friend Michel de Montaigne, maintains in his accusation that, contrary to what is usually believed, the servitude to power of a single man is fundamentally voluntary. In his essay he reminds us, without rhetorical palliatives, that the wildest submission is not the one that breaks through by force, but a product of habit and passivity. This edition includes a prologue by the young philosopher Eudald Espluga, and a handcrafted poster work, by Superabundans Haut.
