En el siglo XXI, la historia de América Latina no puede seguir ignorando los pasados asiáticos. Por varias razones: la importancia creciente de aquella parte del mundo, la reaparición espectacular de China en el escenario planetario y el declive de Europa y del imperio americano. Muchos de nuestros contemporáneos han descubierto esta omnipresencia sin darse cuenta de que –desde hace siglos- no podemos entender los éxitos (y fracasos) del mundo occidental y de la occidentalización, sin introducir un protagonista más: el Extremo Oriente. Una historia global de América Latina tiene que restablecer la dimensión pacífica y asiática del pasado de aquella parte del mundo, de la cual nos habla tan elocuentemente Fernando Iwasaki .
